Abstract:Both efficiency wage theory and contract theory assume that wage rigidity and low turnover of labour go together. This is an often used but rarely proved assumption. The article tries to prove it on a sample of seven l-digit SIC and 19 two-digit SIC industries. Data disaggregated into occupational groups (blue collar, professional, managerial) largely corroborate the assumption. At the same time they do not subscribe to the widely-held view that wage rigidity is caused by the unions.
