Abstract:The fundamental bases of South African society have been questioned and actively challenged, the business context in the country is becoming volatile and uncertain. Large business corporations, the government, the unions and the African National Congress /ANC/ are the major actors in society. In the study the perceptions of management regarding the major issues in the country, and roles of these actors in the future are surveyed. The investigations were carried out over a three year period between 1987 and 1989. It was found that business management perceives itself relatively powerless compared to other actors, especially in terms of the macro society issues, and is quite pessimistic regarding its own ability to influence the future.
