Abstract: | The idea of and necessity for a "third-order cybernetics" is introduced. It is done through the critique and problematisation of the ontology of the observer as elaborated within a second-order cybernetics. The epistemological presumptions are provided upon which a new characterisation of and approach to the business organisation is generated, and presented as "Economy of Discourses". The Economy is a description of the effects of a third-order in second-order observer's invention of himself as subject. Two case studies are included, one of a chemical-based manufacturer, the other of a large accountancy practice. It is ended by an outline of the implications for an ethics of consultancy. |
