Abstract:A longitudinal study of autonomous work groups was conducted at a new and an established minerals processing plant owned and operated by the Australian arm of a multinational corporation. The results provide clear support for the hypothesis that employees in autonomous work groups reported more favorable work attitudes than those operating under traditional work structures. However, the results confirm previous findings of higher absenteeism and turnover among autonomous work groups. Research on absenteeism and turnover has suggested that the causes of both are potentially diverse and often outside the organizational sphere.
