Abstract:Political considerations frequently enter into decisions concerning human resources, for example, whom to hire and how an employee's performance is evaluated. The impact of politics on human resource management (HRM) seems to be different when the organization is compared to a machine and when it is perceived as a culture. It is argued that contemporary personnel selection and performance evaluation systems are encouraging the development of a creature named "organizational chameleon" because fitting or blending in becomes the all-important result of one's image-management efforts. Some recommendations on how to improve HRM practices are given. A better understanding of politics and how it affects HRM decisions is necessary.
