Abstract:The focus is on unemployment problems in the transition from a centrally planned to a market economy. The first part analyses internal and external factors that contributed to the growth of open unemployment in 1990 and assesses the reliability of the relevant statistical data. There follows a review of the main features of the country's economic reform programme, the expected structural changes and their probable impact on future unemployment. Finally, various employment policy measures and associated institutional arrangements are considered. Data on economic and unemployment trends in the first quarter of 1991 show that the effects of the reform are really beginning to bite.
