Abstract: | The study of the effects of trade unions upon wages has been both central part of labour economics and one of the most intensively researched parts of applied economics. Microeconomic data set on British establishments is used to examine the effects of unionism upon employment behaviour, to fill the gap between consequences of trade union activities and the growth of employment. First, the 1984 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey data are used for cross-tabulations on the simple correlation between unionism and growth rate of employment. It is followed by sections attempting to answer obvious questions suggested by this correlation, and the conclusions are summarized. |
