Abstract:The concept of "social networks" has underpinned much of the debate on the trajectory of ethnic minority enterprise. In the form of the "family" and the "community" such networks are often presented as critical to the start-up, development and "competitive advantage" of ethnic businesses. Drawing on interviews with 50 Asian employers in the typical inner city area of Wolverhampton, England, this paper argues that the significance of social networks needs to be assessed against the wider context of racism in which ethnic minority firms often operate.
