Abstract: | The article based on the analysis of Harold Pinter's play 'Betrayal' explores one of the central notions of speech-act theory, shared knowledge. If communication is viewed as a provisional process, shared knowledge becomes one of many variables whose value is specified by speaker and hearer at every moment. |
