Abstract:Many organizations do not adapt effectively to changes in their environments. Although strategic maladaptation can occur, theorists particularly focused on organizational inertia as an underlying phenomenon. However, evidence also exists that top executives themselves are not uniformly open minded about change. What causes some executives to be open minded about change and others to be more committed to the status quo? This study directly examines the determinants of one particular executive orientation: commitment to the status quo.
