Abstract:Deregulation of opening hous in Germany is an important topic in the political discussion. This paper analyzes a model where two retailers choose opening hours. The nature of the Nash equilibria of the game varies depending on the increase in sales revenues or costs, an the shift of revenues to evening hours caused by a prolongation of opening hours. We also consider the influence of current opening hour regulations on market structure, retailers' profits, and conumers' and employees' welfare. It is shown that the existing regulation of opening hours may force the retailers to play strategies which yield a higher profit to both of them than the noncooperative equilibrium. In this case , their resistance against a deregulation is rational.
