Abstract:This paper develops a theory of collusive pricing over the business cycle. The most-collusive prices are characterized as functions of business-cycle parameters, and a variety of specific predictions are offered. The most-collusive prices are weakly procyclical when growth rates are positively correlated through time, the amplitude of the collusive pricing cycle is increased when recession phases are longer and boom phases are shorter in expected duration, and transitory demand shocks have the effect of lowering the most-collusive price regardless of whether the market is a boom or a recession phase.
