Abstract:This article studies the impact of different information structures on the design of a managerial control system through their effect on the optimal task assignment decision. Using information structures to define the boundaries of a firm, this article finds conditions under which the firm will find it optimal to integrate the design of managerial control system with performance of downstream tasks internally while outsourcing the upstream tasks. An appropriate design of two important elements of the managerial control system, the principal's control of predecision information flow and incentive contracts, can help in eliminating the inefficinecies in resource allocation. arising from the agents' incomplete information at the contracting time.
