Abstract:After the chaos of the 1980s, African banks are beginning to hold their heads up again. Liberalisation and fierce competitive winds have streamrolled African banks into the modern world -- and very many of them are finding the new climate very healthy indeed. The IMF puts Africa's real GDP growth in 1996 at 5%, the highest for over decade. The Fund projects growth this year at 4.7%, and inflation at 12%, down from 24.8% in 1996. But the African Development Bank warns that projected growth rates are contingent on macroeconomic stability, continued adherence to structural reforms, net capital inflows, and debt relief on the region's $306.2bn external debt.
