Abstract:While many contemporary organizations recognize the need for empowered employees, they frequently run into problems attempting to implement programs. This article explores the reasons that implementation often proves so difficult in large organizations. Drawing on their experience in helping companies develop effective programs as well as on their own intensive research, the authors present seven critical questions aimed at helping executives confront the challenges of implementing employee empowerment. Most empowerment programs, say the authors, are embedded in a mechanistic perspective, which assumes that empowerment is a set of managerial practices focused on cascading power to lower levels.
