Abstract:Written and unwritten rules have various coordination and motivation functions in interorganizational networks. They contribute to the reduction of uncertainty, to information storage and transfer as well as the delineation of task fields and task owners. This article uses a case study as starting point in order to illustrate in how far continous obedience to rules through the partnering firms results in competitive advantages and higher efficiency for the net- work as a whole. Furthermore it is shown that many business administeration scientists tend to assume that networks can be planned, designed and managed in a construcvistic man- ner by the top management. They neglect the unplanned de- velopment and evolution, which takes place within networks by spontaneous interaction of the partnering firms.
