Abstract: | Since the beginning of the 1990s, it has generally been expected that in the course of European integration the financial systems of the different countries in Europe would converge rapidly and profoundly. The present article demonstrates that at least for the time until the advent of the common currency, this general belief is not supported by the facts. Empirical studies covering the role of banks in the intermediation process, the financing patterns of non-financial firms and of the prevailing type of corporate governance do not support the expectation of a structural convergence. The German and the British financial systems are as different as they have been for a long time. |
