Abstract:During the post-Fordist shift of the past three decades or so, a renewed growth of small firms and independent self-employment has become a conspicuous feature of many advanced capitalist economies, typically encouraged by a neo-liberal policy approach. The recent articulation of the 'mixed embeddedness' perspective has led to a significant broadening of the debate. According to this view, the particular forms that ethnic minority or immigrant enterprises take will be influenced by a range of factors, such as sector, locality, labour markets and the institutional context. The contributors to this volume illuminate a broader approach to ethnic minority entrepreneurship by fleshing out aspects of the institutional context in different settings, particularly in relation to the political and regulatory environment.
