Abstract:This paper examines how small low-wage firms survive on the margins of a modern economy combining empirical evidence from four research projects. It develops an analytical framework linking the product and labour market contexts of small firms with their family contexts. In order to survive, these firms need labour through kinship networks, and they need to respond actively to product market opportunities.
