Abstract:This article deals with the differences in international strategy btw. multinational enterprises (MNE) in services and manufacturing, particularly as to their international diversification. Based on longitudinal data, the largest MNEs in services are shown to have a much stronger home-region orientation than manufacturing MNEs. The possible reasons for the relative lack of globalization of services firms are also explored. There are two main reasons: the difficulty of adapting separately upstream activities (as: acts.) and downstream acts. in high distance host environments, and the difficulty of selecting activity locations as a function of supply side criteria.
