Abstract:The author tackles a difficult subject, ie how to generate profit from new technology. He sees as a main problem for technology-based companies the successful translation of new technologies into competitive products and services, and the build-up of profit by customers. These problems are especially acute when the transactions involve complex technologies, large expenditures for research and development as well as long gestation periods. Evidence suggests that the competitive performance of many such Canadian companies both at home and abroad is not satisfactory. Yet the future Canadian economy depends on the success of just such companies.
