| Abstract: | The linkages among product strategy, formal organization, and product manager behavior were investigated in large, diversified organizations. It was shown that at lower levels in the hierarchy there were real problems to make the linkage between strategy and formal organization. The major constraining factors were identified. Informal management processes, the behavior of product managers proved to be crucial in implementing strategy at lower levels. Attributes of product managers with "growth" and "harvest" products were compared. The need for versatile and broadly trained product managers was found vital. Senior managers have a responsibility to educate their junior counterparts in real life learning situations. |
