Abstract:Twenty-four companies or business units and their strategy-implementing managers were surveyed by interview and questionnaire. The responses were analyzed using cluster analysis, standard tests etc. The research suggests that the type of strategy does affect the general manager's job content because of differences in implementation requirements. Three types of strategy were examined: the developing, the stabilizing and the turnaround making strategy. Strategy based personality traits and role descriptions are needed. Using the so-called Analysis of Variance, it was found that managerial roles in strategy implementation had been affected much more by strategy type than by organization size or industry type.
