Abstract:Forecasting as a function of professional specialists is described. But experts rarely understand managers' needs and are unable to forge the necessary link between the forecasts and the management systems they serve. Managing the forecasters is an imperative today. In order to do this effectively a manager's knowledge must include: awareness of the range of techniques available; apprehension of past forecasting errors; ability to make the above mentioned link. A checklist of the elements of success is presented. The value of forecasts, and the confidence to be placed in them can be subject to three tests: statistical track record; plausibility; appropriateness. The tasks of a manager are summarized.
