Abstract:Formal planning's contribution to strategy development is discussed. It is found to be less direct than is usually assumed. The correlation between performance and the use of formal planning is examined. The results of a study of the role of planning in three organizations are presented. The main data sources are listed. The general characteristics of the organizations examined are outlined. For distinct types of roles were identified: public relations, information, group therapy, direction and control. Group therapy was found to be the most important. It includes communication and participation in the strategic vision. Formal planning is discussed as a social process. The role of the planner is analysed. Managerial implications are summarized.
