Abstract:The main problem is that today's diversified firms are organized to run large, mature, cost-efficient businesses rather than innovative, growth-oriented concerns. A leading organizational cause of why new product initiatives fail in large divisionalized firms, howerer, is top management's preoccupation with current operations, or to paraphrase Grasham's Law, "Existing products drive new products out". Therefore, even when a new product idea is given initial corporate approval, many new products simply die from inattention. Still another major organizational factor thwarting the new product process in large companies is the firm's reward/punishment system. It is recommended that new projects be as unrelated as possible to existing units.
