Abstract:Interest in superconductivity has ebbed and flowed, as specific discoveries or observations were made and their limitations recognized. With the discovery of materials which have superconductive properties at temperatures far above those previously achieved, government, industry and academia have reacted vigorously in the belief that this technology has moved from the realms of basic science to precommercial application. The response of the electricity industry to the new developments in superconductivity has been generally cautious, though not dismissive. The contrast between this view and the euphoria in other circles is significant, however.
