Abstract:For any year the gross domestic product /GDP/ of the United Kingdom is an estimated figure. This is revised as new information becomes available. As far as published figures are concerned, no new estimates are made after 12 years. There is therefore on true GDP figure, for some years the final published estimate is more than 6 per cent different from the first estimate. These errors affect the way in which GDP data are used. Two of the main applications are as general background information on the economic environment and as an input to calculations and techniques. However, the size and pattern in which the revisions are made shows consistency from year to year.
