Abstract:The results of a longitudinal extension of earlier studies on comprehensiveness are reported. A conclusion is that comprehensiveness tends to persist. Some change did occur, but it is typically modest. Therefore, the strategic processes of the firms studied exhibit considerable inertia. The results indicate that increases in executive-team tenure, which tend to be accompanied by high levels of team continuity, and increases in organizational size, are associated with increased comprehensiveness. Therefore, it appears that these conditions, which are natural by-products of an organization's continued evolution, contribute to a phenomenon what is called creeping rationality.
