Abstract: | The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is flawed as a procedure for ranking alternatives in that the rankings produced by this procedure are arbitrary. A brief review is provided of several areas of operational difficulty with the AHP, and then the focus is on the arbitrary rankings that occur when the principle of hierarchic composition is assumed. It is concluded that much more is to be gained from a synthesis of AHP and multiattribute utility theory than from efforts to maintain them as separate areas of research and application. |
