Abstract:In Canada there are two sets of multinationals (MNEs): USA subsidiaries in Canada and Canadian-owned MNEs, the latter operating mainly in the United States. Their strategic planning is affected by environmental changes in international trade and investment policies. A new model is developed to assist in analyzing and predicting the changes in competitive strategies undertaken by the two sets of MNEs in response to the Canada-USA Free Trade Agreement. Different sources of competitive advantage are specified. Some aspects of adjustment by Canadian-owned MNEs are studied first, then the adjustment by USA subsidiaries in Canada is examined. Both sets of MNEs have adapted their policies to the global trading regime.
