Abstract: | All strategic alliances may be thought of as transition mechanisms that propel the partners' strategy forward in a turbulent environment. What it will be - a licensing arrangement, a joint venture, a consortium? Each has its positive and negative features. The following issues are examined: 1. the underlying strategic rationale or its formation; 2. the benefits and costs associated with the strategy; 3. the critical success factors required for its implementation; 4. The role of strategic human resources management. Strategies for licensing in manufacturing differ from those for services and franchises. Joint ventures are either specialized ventures or shared-value-adding ventures. Consortia are exemplified by the keiretsu. |
