Abstract:While there is evidence that shift work is a risk factor for the health of shift workers, many shift workers are engaged in shift systems for years. To improve shift workers' health and tolerance, recent research points to the importance of measures addressing both the effects of disruptions in circadian rhythms, and the actual interferences with daily routines at work and in family and social life. Recent developments in research in relation to health and tolerance to shift work offer useful guidance for improving conditions of shift work.
