Abstract:Japan's economic success has fired interest in the transferability of its personnel management practices. After examining the main differences between the traditional Japanese and North American models, it is considered to what extent the practice of eight Japanese parent companies have been transferred to their subsidiaries in Canada and with what modifications. The analysis is then extended by comparing the personnel management practices of Japanese subsidiaries or joint ventures in Singapore, Malaysia and India with those of locally owned counterpart firms. The discussion shows how certain cultural factors, in particular, support or inhibit particular styles of personnel management, and points to some probable implications.
