Abstract:The interest in candidate gene studies of human behavior is rising in economics and entrepreneurship research. Carrying out and interpreting these studies is not straightforward as the candidate selection affects the interpretation of the results. For example, Nicolaou et al. (Small Bus Econ 36:151-155, 2011) report a significant connection between a common genetic variant in the DRD3 gene and the likelihood to be an entrepreneur. We fail to replicate this result using a much larger, independent dataset. Additionally, we cover the candidate gene approach and give suggestions to avoid the publication of false positives.
