Abstract:A new quantitative method for determining the optimal unit load size in material handling based on an approximation model is presented. The relationship between unit load size and material handling costs is described as a trade-off between move cost and holding cost. Like the concept of EOQ in inventory theory, the minimum point on the total cost curve is defined as the economic move quantity. The determination is based on a queueing network approximation and is subject to the constraints of the container and material handling device. Given standard cost data on the material handling device, direct labour and direct material, the EMQ can be easily determined.
