| Abstract: | This introduction presents key issues of the Special issue on Biotechnology and the Consumer of Journal of Consumer Policy Dec, vol. 21, no. 4, 1998. This Special issue is a subset of expert papers sponsored by the Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) of Industry Canada. The papers included focus on issues having implications for the bt. policy worldwide. The full set of papers are published under the title 'Biotechnology and the Consumer' (published by the Kluwer). Biotechnology (= bt.) is a rapidly developing sector of the economy for countries throughout the world, leading to heated debate about the benefits and risks. Consumers and producers alike are concerned about the realities and perceptions of the bt. |
