Abstract:This article approaches the topic of modularity from the perspective of problem-solving, and defines modularity as a decomposition heurestic, which helps decompose complex problems into more approachable sub-problems. The paper concentrates on examining the trade-offs of modularity. The results of the analysis indicate that balancing the trade-off depends on the problem environment's complexity and volatility. Complex environments have the advantage of over-modulization, whereas in markedly volatile environments modular search proves inefficient.
