Abstract: | This article tackles the problem of understanding the origins of innovations. The paper argues that processes of exaptation generate radical innovations, and to support this view, a dynamical model analysing the interaction of artefact innovation and attributions of functionality is introduced. The findings of the analysis indicate that the exaption phenomenon is more easily understood through explicit representations of artefacts and categories. In the context of the study exaption is seen as a transition of leading attributions. |
