Abstract: | This article hypothesizes that collaborations only gaining access to external knowledge contribute less to heterogeneity between companies and have a much weaker effect on patenting than alliances that transfer highly company-specific knowledge. It is also hypothesized that collaborations between private companies and public organizations accelerate the rate of patenting to a higher degree than collaborations among private companies. These propositions are tested on the population of 839 US biotechnology companies between 1973 and 2003. |
