Abstract:The development of biotechnology is discussed. The role of existing large, mainly pharmaceutical companies and new, specialized biotechnology firms is examined. Special difficulties of the latter are highlighted. Production, marketing, and financial possibilities are analysed. The ultimate decision is whether to produce and sell drugs for human use. Debt finance is described as a bad way for new small firms. The results of a study of six companies are presented. Development trends are outlined and compared with experiences in other countries. The role of equity capital is examined. Possible organizational forms are analysed, together with general strategies.
