Abstract:Using firm-level data for Japanese multinational enterprises (MNEs), this paper examines the impact of overseas (henceforth as: o-s.) subsidiaries' (as: sub/s.) R&D activities on the productivity (here as: prdy.) growth of parent firms. Based on survey responses, each o-s. sub/s' R&D is classified as either 'innovative R&D,' which is hypothesized (as: h-ed.) to lead to the acquisition of foreign knowledge, or 'adaptive R&D,' which is h-ed. to lead to adaptation to local conditions. It is found that o-s. innovative R&D raises the parent firm's prdy. growth, whereas adaptive R&D does not. In addition, o-s. innovative R&D does not improve the rate of return on home R&D.
