Abstract:This paper presents a model showing how growth depends on knowledge (henceforth as: knwl.) accumulation and its diffusion through both incumbents and entrepreneurial activities. Entrepreneurs are claimed to be one missing link in converting knwl. into economically relevant knwl. Implementing different regression techniques for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries from 1981 to 2002, there is surprisingly robust evidence provided that primarily entrepreneurs contributed to growth and that the importance of entrepreneurs increased in the 1990s. The results indicate that policies easing entrepreneurship are an important tool to enhance knwl. diffusion and to promote economic growth.
