Abstract:The major European wine markets and their trends are overviewed. The market falls broadly into five categories with certain variations in the two major wine producing nations of France and Italy. In 1990 the French market was the most dynamic in real value terms. In terms of product sectors, the largest area of demand, for still table wines, is showing gradual losses. The growing consumer taste for lighter, less alcoholic wines has caused a decline in sales of vermouths and fortified wines. Growth is occuring in premium wines and sparkling wines. Future prospects are mixed with fortunes in this market dependent on consumer attitudes towards health, lifestyle and income. Germany and UK are forecast to grow in value.
