Abstract:For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), generating good ideas for R&D projects is only a start. Identifying and prioritizing the ones worth pursuing can be equally challenging and time-consuming. This study, based on a survey of SMEs in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, introduces simple way to thinking about the assessment problem. The technique enables R&D project planners to score and rank proposed projects based on the difference between the investment of resources needed to assure success and the investment that planners predict would be feasible under present business circumstances.
