Abstract:The public debate on economic policy in Germany has taken on new forms since the start of the recession of West Germany. There can be little doubt that the now unified Germany faces problems of both a structural and cyclical nature. These problems are, however, regionally specific: East Germany is dominated by supply-side problems, in particular, its lack of industrial competitiveness. West Germany, on the other hand, is suffering mainly from weak demand, which results from a conflict between wage-growth aspirations and monetary policy.
