Abstract: | This paper examines the impact of tax and public service performance (henceforth as: p-s-p.) on English local government (here as: loc-gov.) popularity based on data on local property taxes, service performance (as: perf.) ratings and local election results after introducing a system of loc-gov. perf. evaluation (as Comprehensive Performance Assessment). The evidence offers a somewhat more rounded portrait of the voter than the conventional fiscal conservative icon, by highlighting the beneficial consequences of p-s-p. on gov. popularity and pointing to the role of local media networks (namely, the BBC regional television, local radio and web network) in forming consensus by tax-related information spreading. |
