Abstract:This article examines relationships between board characteristics and company reputation. Based on a sample of 324 companies in Fortune's list of most admired firms in the USA, the results show that board characteristics significantly affect the evaluation of company reputation by the business community. It is found that companies with a greater number of outside directors and those with larger boards showed better reputation than those with smaller boards and a higher proportion of insiders. It was also found an inverted-U relationship between the average tenure of outside directors and corporate reputation. However, the results show a negative relationship between independent leadership structure and company reputation.
