Abstract:Hungary was first set on the track of economic and political pluralism by a communist regime which then seemed to lose ground under its first freely-elected non-communist government. It would be doubly ironic if it was to be put back on course by some of those same former communists after they had been voted back into government. But this is the way events seem to be turning out in Hungary. It fell to the former communist party officers to steer Hungary back on the reform path.
