Abstract:Quietly, without the rest of the world yet realising it, Croatia could be shaping up into one of central Europe's post-communist success stories. The war next door in Bosnia-Hercegivina has dominated the headlines. But, off stage, the Croats have been laying solid groundwork for their re-emergence as a prosperous market economy. The key move was a tough macro-economic programme launched in 1990. Prices were freed. Monetary controls were tightened. Nominal wage growth was restricted.
